Små tuvor kan stjälpa stora lass. Ett exempel på det är lokalbefolkningens kamp mot det multinationella bolaget i dokumentärfilmen ”Wild Coast Warriors”.
I samarbete med Naturskyddsföreningen i Katrineholm välkomnar Åsadalen alla besökare att ta del av denna fängslande skildring av miljöaktivism och folkligt motstånd.
I likhet med övriga programpunkter under demokratifestivalen den 24 maj kan du ta del av filmen utan kostnad.
Den vilda kusten som filmtiteln anspelar på är en otämjd kustlinje i den sydafrikanska provinsen East Cape. Där har ursprungsbefolkningen i århundraden levt i samklang med Indiska Oceanen och kustmiljön, och stått emot de krafter som försökt inkräkta på området och dess naturresurser.
När oljebolaget Shell började undersöka möjligheterna att utvinna olja och gas i kustbandet, inleddes en David- mot Goliatkamp. Den slutade med att ursprungsbefolkningen till skydd för havsmiljön och sin kultur drog bolaget inför rätta.

Svenska Naturskyddsföreningen samarbetar med flera av organisationerna som syns i filmen. Föreningens visningar av filmen brukar följas av samtal med publiken. Några exempel på frågor som då diskuteras är vilka lärdomar som kan dras av kampen vid The Wild Coast, hur den kan inspirera till skyddet av den svenska naturen, och hur miljöaktivister kan stötta varandra när deras kamp bemöts med hot och hat.

Small things can tip the balance – even against giants. A powerful example of this is the local community’s resistance against a multinational oil company, as portrayed in the documentary Wild Coast Warriors.
In collaboration with Naturskyddsföreningen (the Society for Nature Conservation) in Katrineholm, Åsadalen warmly welcomes all visitors to experience this captivating depiction of environmental activism and grassroots resistance.
Like all other events during the democracy festival on 24 May, this film screening is free of charge.
The “wild coast” referenced in the film’s title is an untamed stretch of shoreline in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. There, indigenous communities have lived in harmony with the Indian Ocean and the coastal environment for centuries, resisting those who have sought to encroach on the area and its natural resources.
When the oil company Shell began exploring opportunities to extract oil and gas along the coast, a David versus Goliath battle began – one that ended with the indigenous people taking the company to court to protect the marine environment and their cultural heritage.

Naturskyddsföreningen collaborates with several of the organisations featured in the documentary. Their screenings are often followed by audience discussions. Topics typically include the lessons to be drawn from the struggle along the Wild Coast, how it can inspire protection of nature in Sweden, and how environmental activists can support one another in the face of threats and hostility.
