Sampled är en interaktiv installation som utforskar den djupa kopplingen mellan jazz och hiphop genom samplingens konst – praktiken att ta fragment av befintlig musik och omvandla dem till något nytt.
Utställningen spårar jazzens rötter tillbaka till afroamerikanska musiktraditioner såsom worksongs, field hollers, spirituals och ring shouts – uttrycksformer präglade av gemenskap, motstånd och överlevnad. Därifrån följer utställningen hur dessa musikaliska idéer utvecklades till jazz, en genre som kännetecknas av improvisation, rytm och självuttryck.
När vi rör oss framåt i tiden utforskar Sampled vidare hiphopens framväxt i 1970-talets New York, där DJ:er började loopa och manipulera skivor för att skapa nya ljudlandskap. Genom denna process blev jazzinspelningar grunden för hiphopbeats och skapade en bro mellan dåtid och nutid.
I dag blir gränserna mellan jazz och hiphop allt mer suddiga. Musiker och producenter rör sig fritt mellan genrer och kombinerar liveimprovisation med digital sampling. Ljud lånas inte längre enbart – de omtolkas och formas om till nya konstnärliga uttryck.
Genom ljud, text och visuella element bjuder Sampled in dig att lyssna, reflektera och utforska hur musik för historien vidare och visar hur det förflutna fortsätter att forma nuet.

Sampled is an interactive installation that explores the deep connection between jazz and hip-hop through the art of sampling – the practice of taking fragments of existing music and transforming them into something new.
The exhibition traces the roots of jazz back to African American musical traditions such as work songs, field hollers, spirituals, and ring shouts – forms of expression shaped by community, resistance, and survival. From there, it follows how these musical ideas evolved into jazz, a genre defined by improvisation, rhythm, and self-expression.
Moving forward in time, Sampled explores the emergence of hip-hop in 1970s New York, where DJs began looping and manipulating records to create new soundscapes. Through this process, jazz recordings became the foundation for hip-hop beats, creating a bridge between past and present.
Today, the boundaries between jazz and hip-hop are increasingly blurred. Musicians and producers move freely between genres, combining live improvisation with digital sampling. Sounds are no longer simply borrowed; they are reinterpreted and reshaped into new art.
Through sound, text, and visual elements, Sampled invites you to listen, reflect, and explore how music carries history forward and reveals how the past continues to shape the present.
